Animal Precinct on Animal Planet

Posted by Saint Lover

Yesterday I watched an episode of “Animal Precinct” on Animal Planet and I just cant seem to get it out of my mind.  This particular episode had a Siamese cat that had been tossed against a wall or something by his mentally ill owner and had shattered one of its legs.  The other story on the episode was of two litter mate – male, Saint Bernards that are beyond emaciated and living in a filthy basement.  The neglected pair is rescued and and treated on the show.  They both make remarkable recoveries and are adopted out.

There were so many things about this episode that made me sad.  First their horrid living conditions.  I just dont understand how someone can neglect a big dog.  Its not like they “forget” they are there or “don’t see them” – Saints are people dogs.  They need their people!  If I locked my two in the basement for more than an hour they would be knocking on the door and woofing at me wanting to know when I was coming down there with them, coming to bring them treats or if they could come back up with me.

Secondly, they were not adopted together.  This pains me the most because my B and R are a set of liter mates.  They were together until coming to me at 19 months old.  They were so connected and very dependent on each other.  I had to make the decision whether to separate them and adopt them out or keep them together and ultimately take them on myself.  I know it is a tall order to expect someone to adopt 2 giant dogs together at once, but there are people out there that will do it.  I wish the show would have contacted a rescue to take them on.  In fact, I know the lady that runs the Saint Rescue in Conn.  She would have been more than happy to take them on to keep them together.

The show made me so sad that I actually had tears in my eyes and had to give my big lunks big hugs and kisses.

That is so sad.. .but good they got homes. I can’t watch that show, just makes me cry too much.

I hope the show does raise awareness, though.

I am glad it raises awareness too.. but only among the true lovers. Most people just dont really care.

Jenn – It IS really hard to watch. Needless to say, I haven’t watched any animal cop shows since then. I am such a softie I just cant stomach it!

I watched that same episode and was so saddened by the separation of the two Saint brothers. I was so choked up about it and could not understand why they were not kept together–especially after all they had been through together. But after seeing the very end of the show, things were put into perspective–they both obviously had such wonderful homes and their new owners were willing to meet up in the park to allow them to play together. That was the only time I have ever watched the show and I can honestly say I will never watch it again.

I dont think I will ever watch that show again either. I don’t have the stomach for it. Who knows how long they will still be able to meet up with each other. I would have taken them together in a heart beat.
