Coby
Coby is the black lab that lives on the next street over. Coby is the neighborhood wanderer. He is a very nice dog, very friendly, but his owner really irks me. I started to walk Apollo, Brutus and Rufus the other night around 11:30pm. Its quiet then and i don’t have to worry about the little ankle biters charging out at us. We manage out of our house and start down the sidewalk and my son say “what the heck!” and points at Coby thinking one of our dogs has escaped some how. Of course it is Coby. I usher my dogs back in the house quickly and set out after Coby with a leash in hand.
I catch up with him and we march back to his house. The lights are off and his owner has gone to bed for the night and left Coby outside. I ring the bell a couple of times and finally she comes to the door. I say “Is this yours?” and she takes Coby in. We start talking and she begins to tell me how bad he is and asks if I want him. She can’t find anyone else that will take him. Ummm NO – got 4 labs of my own, thanks. I ask her if she walks him and of course she doesn’t and the invisible fence? well, its so invisible that its non-existent. He apparently went through it after two days and she just shut it off and he doesn’t wear the collar anymore. So he is free to roam the neighborhood. I try to explain the benefits of regular walks, but she has her hands full with 2 kids and has NO intention of walking him. She says she fully expects to find him dead on the road one of these days, and I think she is hoping for that.
Some people don’t deserve to have animals! grrrr

Are you sure you dont’ live in my neighborhood.
Maybe you can offer to walk him for a fee?

She has her hands full with two kids?
She probably is as conscientious with them as she is with her dogs. This is such a sad situation and a reason I don’t encourage people to get dogs unless they understand the commitment.

Hoomans like her don’t deserve to have a dog! We feel sorry for Coby! We wish he had people who cared about him!
Love ya lots

What a pathetic hooman she is! If she can’t take care of it, simply give it away but she needs to put in some effort to find it a good home. Obviously she doesn’t care if he even goes to a new home. Just as long he gets lost…Sigh…

Havent got an answer for this one. Its frustrating in the extreme. I feel for her having two (I assume little) children and also a dog, but if she’s not prepared to ask for help then what can you do (& its hard to be sympathetic). Perhaps there is an older neighourhood child who she can pay to walk Coby, though if he is untrained its probably a risk.
You could threaten her with the pound but it sounds like she may welcome it. Ask her to advertise him at the vets and community noticeboard. For every slack dog owner out there, there is someone who loves and is looking for a dog…
Perhaps if you explain that should he cause an accident she will have to foot the bill?? I’m stretching it here but it gets my goat
Let us know how she gets on…

Agreed — some people should not have dogs. It’s really very sad how some people treat their animals.

LOL Jen… It’s really a sad state of affairs. I offered to walk him for free…
She’s a single mom with two young kids that are also quite a handful from what I understand. I think the youngest one, a boy, is a wanderer too and I anticipate finding him out front one of these days too.
I feel sorry for Coby too Maggie and Mitch, I wish he had someone like your mom and dad that would dote on him and dress him up in fancy bandanas and collars.
Amber Mae, I don’t think she cares enough to find him a home let alone a good one. I think she is just waiting for him to get hit or pickup up by animal control.
Thanks for stopping by NanJo! Your beeds are AMAZING! You really need to make a Saint Bernard Bead
Can I request a special order?
I agree Vicki, people like that make ALL dog owners look bad. We have to fight so many stereotypes as it is let alone have someone pathetic like that come along and make things worse.
Do you think it would do any good to call the local animal shelter and report this? I’m not sure what they would really do in this situation though.

Lindsay, I was thinking about offing to get Coby into rescue. I just don’t know how to approach her about it yet. I guess the next time I have to catch him I will play it by ear when I take him back.
oof! good luck. where i live there are quite a few strays or dogs behind shoddy fences and we’ve had a few close encounters on late night walks. its both sad and a little scary.
