Satin Balls – weight gain magic

Posted by Saint Lover

Here’s a good recipe for dogs that have trouble putting on or keeping weight on due to illness, age or prior neglect. Many rescues use these when they take in dogs that are severely malnutritioned. They will cause rapid weight gain so monitor the dog to make sure he/she is not gaining too much weigh too rapidly.

Satin Balls

  • 5 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind]
  • 1/2 lg. box of Total cereal
  • 1/2 lg. box oatmeal
  • 1/2 jar of wheat germ
  • 3/4 cup veg oil
  • 3/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
  • 5 raw eggs AND shells
  • 5 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
  • pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf. Divide into 5 quart freezer bags (roll into balls approximately the size of tennis balls) and freeze. Thaw as needed and feed raw!

We “wish” this was our problem! We have no trouble putting on weight! Mom is in total agreement with us on this issue! Thanks for the recipe though!

Sounds like a great recipe — but here too that’s not our problem — people keep asking me if my Dobie is a Rottweiler cuz she’s a little chubby

Hey you guys! I saw your photo on the awesome photo of the month page on DWB and just had to stop by. Its great to see other full sized dogs! My momma has to pick up my poopies too, but at least there is only one of me. One time a dog trainer told her to put the poop in her pocket so she would have her hands free for training. Obviously she had never experienced big dog poop.

Stop by my blog and say hi.

LOL Maggie and Mitch – none of our dogs have that problem either… infact, we have to “watch our weight” so mom says. We like to watch for crumbs falling or watch for left overs… Does that make us bad?

Nanjo my chocolate lab is made of solid chocolate… bwahahah! No, seriously, we have to watch her intake as well. As nasty as it is, she will ‘supplement” her diet with (doodoo) if we dont watch her like a hawk! GROSS

Thanks for stopping by Mango! We will have to run right over and check you out!

how much do feed per day

  8. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Maria, it really depends on how large you make the balls, how large the dog is and how much weight they need to gain.

How much should I feed to my Saint that needs to put on between 50-60 pounds. He getting feed 8 cups of Nutro max, and 2 cups of mac and cheese. So, how many of these balls should I feed him?

How old is the dog? If it is that underweight, you should probably consult a dietary specialist so the dog gains the proper weight in a healthy fashion. Good luck to you. Sounds like your baby needs som TLC.

My Great Dane is allergic to eggs. We found out after having allergy tests done through our vet. She is also allergic to Rice, Pork, Lamb, & Peas. Can you leave out or replace the eggs in the satin balls with something else? Please help she is looking so sad.

My dad’s 2 year old German Shepherd is about 61 pounds, we’ve had him and his sister since they were 3 months and he’s a larger Shepherd. About a year ago he was 80 pounds. The female is a nice weight for her size and they eat the same food. We give him 2 cups of dry Science Diet and a whole can of wet food twice a day and he’s not interested in eating half of the time. We’ve been trying vet prescribed supplements but he’s only lost weight on them. He’s a completely happy boy and very active. I wanted to know how many a day I should feed him if I wanted him to gain about 20-25 pounds is I make them the size of a golf ball? He has mild Hip Dysplasia in his right hip so he shouldn’t be too heavy. Thank you!

First I would make sure there isnt some other issue going on with him that would cause the weight loss. It is possible he doesnt like the food you are feeding him and a change may be necessary. There is not a tried and true number of satin balls to feed per day. They are very calorie dense so I would start out with 3 and adjust it accordingly. Good luck.

You can adjust the recipe accordingly. I would use something like peanutbutter as a binder or extra water. There are several variations of this recipe that can be found on the web. Good luck.
