Keeping Kool in the Kitchen

Posted by Saint Lover

“I scream. You scream. We all scream for ICE CREAM!”

The temps are starting to raise a little higher each day. Soon we will be in the full grips of summer. What better way to keep cool than eating ice cream or frosty paws/pupsicles. I have 3 tasty reicpes for frozen dog confections you may want to try. I have a batch of “Brutus Buckets” in the freezer as we speak. For an extra special treat try filling a Kong with one of these recipes and freezing!

Brutus Buckets

  • 32 oz low-fat or non-fat yogurt
  • 2 mashed bananas
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 2 Tbs honey

Combine all ingredients in bowl and blend well. Fill small paper Dixie cups (the bathroom size) with the mixture. Freeze for at least two hours. Let stand for a few minutes to soften prior to serving. Yields 10 – 3oz Brutus Buckets.

Zeusicles

  • 1 large containter of fat-free or non-fat vanilla yogurt
  • 1 can pumpkin
  • ½ cup peanut butter

Blend all ingredients together in a bowl. Using a spoon, place into small snack size ziplock baggies and form into the shape of a popsicle. Place in freezer and allow to harden. Yields 20 Zeusicles.

Rufus Toes (our version of frosty paws)

  • 32 oz plain non-fat or low-fat yogurt
  • 46 oz applesauce
  • 1 qt low sodium chicken broth

Combine ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour mixture into ice cube trays and freeze. Store cubes in a large ziplock freezer bag. Yields 9 trays of Rufus Toes.

    Ummm Yummy,
it’s been raining a lot here in the south of England, I haven’t had chance to sample any ice cream, but I have had fun with towels.
Love ‘n’ slobber to the crew.

Excellent.. I’ll have to try these.. I’ve done applesauce and kefir frozen.. I usually fill little dixie cups and freeze them.. then I can dunk them in hot water, peel off the wrap and hand them a frozen treat…

makes a heck of a mess… but whatever

What great ideas! When I read your blog I really find myself wanting a dog! But, I think I’d have a kitty mutiny! :) I wonder – I’ll have to come up with some kitty versions of your summer treats!

Ace would love that. Do you ever worry about all the sugar on their teeth? I worry about that, whether I should or not, I’m not sure.

We’ve had way too much rain in the last couple of days too. Funny, when I was in London last year, it rained on me too!

  11. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

No problem Maggie and Mitch.. I hope you can use your puppy dog eyes to talk her into making some.

  12. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks Rachael.. They are so much healthier than ice cream too.

  13. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

You’re welcome Dot-Spot! I hope you can con your mom into making you some.

They are messy Jen, I give mine outside on the patio, lay them on a towel or put them in their bowls to cut down on the mess.

LOL Amiga…Thanks for thinking of us :) if you need any tips on keeping big lunky long haired dogs cool, I’m your huckleberry.

  16. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

HMMM Tammy, good question. I wonder if your kitties would like them. There’s nothing in there they can’t have. They sell cool claws for kitties at the grocery so I am sure if you look hard enough you could probably find a recipe for them.

  17. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Kaos, tell her to make them all at the same time! ;) They keep in the freezer so you dont have to worry about them going bad.

  18. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Lindsay, I don’t think you really have to worry about the sugar content in them. It is nominal and there’s no added sugars or preservatives. All three recipes are better for dogs than normal ice cream.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!!! I think there are some tasty treats in my future!

  20. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Let me know how you like them Mango :)
