Not Welcome
We went to the in-laws for a Father’s Day BBQ yesterday afternoon. While we were there I noticed a gorgeous golden retriever running and playing across the field with another family that was having a BBQ as well. They were having a great time and from what I could tell the Golden was very well behaved. I paused for a bit to watch longing for my dogs or at least one of them to join our fun. But that will never happen. My dogs arent welcome at family functions. Not a single one of them. The inlaws dont visit us or have functions at our house because of them, and my dogs are really well behaved. It makes me really sad too.
I do get to use them as an excuse to get out of functions early. They can’t be left for a long time you know, they need to pee or be fed. And it also keeps me from going to West Virginia for Christmas, which is nice because I get to have the whole house to myself to hang out and cuddle with the dogs
Anyone else’s dogs banned from family events?
Is this just the sweetest face… how could anyone not want it kissing them?!

Oh how sad for your dogs aren’t welcome at the family functions. That just makes me so sad! Your dogs are awesome and they are part of your family. My mom was down for a visit a few months ago and said, “your dogs get treated better then your family ( meaning them I guess),” my daughter quickly said, “they are part of our family and they eat dinner when we do!” I was so proud of my daughter and it is true are dogs are our family and we love them. My husband wanted 4 kids and I told him he just didn’t know 2 would be doggies!
He just smiles! I am sorry but I tend to discriminate against people who don’t seem to like dogs. Dogs give such unconditional love and all they want in return is to be loved and taken care of.
When I am out and see other doggies it makes me think of mine and them I miss them. I bet you dread in-law functions. They need to be accepting of your furbabies! Shame on them!!!

That is just sad. If you were part of my family you could bring the dogs whenever you came over.

Our dogs can’t go into my parent’s house so we don’t bring them when it’s too cold or too hot. But sometimes they go by and romp in the yard. And if it were at a park, I’d bring a dog or two for sure!
That is sad yours have been banned, they are such great pups and they are part of the family.
Nope.. no banned… but then again, we don’t get invited to much! I don’t talk with most of my family. But my mom is forever inviting us up with the dogs.. too bad we live an hour away… and we would be spending the ENTIRE time making sure that no one destroys her house. They can be quite a handful.. even though they are well mannered… we just get them settled down (did I mention she has a cat?… aka moving squeeky toy) and we’d have to go!

Well, I have never met my cousins or my pawrent’s pawrents before. My hoomans don’t talk to them very much nowadays & anyway, they all are Muslims so they have some kind of hatred for dogs. My hoomans never told them that they have us becoz they don;’t want any problems to start…

My parents are awesome for letting my dogs come with me when I come. But the family isn’t dog friendly. They don’t like dogs but they tolerate mine because they have too!! If there is more than just my immediate family around, I always get asked to leave the pups home!!
The family is having a big reunion on the 4th. I’m not going because I can’t bare leave Dylan home alone when the fireworks are going off. They wouldn’t even want him there on leash (and it’s outside!)
My boyfriends family loves having the dogs come around. I am so jealous of that! His mom even made easter baskets for his cat and his dog!!!

I feel sorry for people who don’t want to be around dogs, but not sorry enough to include them in any of my plans. Love me, love my dogs.

Well….we had a discussion about this not long ago. It’s so sad when our extended family doesn’t welcome in our ENTIRE family; and yes! that inclues our fur-kids too!
My parents have always welcomed in the small dogs and even let them sleep in the guest beds with us (they don’t let their own dogs sleep in their bed but know our dogs are used to that, so they tolerate it). On the other hand, I know it bothers my mom when the big dogs go along, but she doesn’t say much. Hey…she knows she can welcome in all of us or not have us visit at all. Willow will be making her first trip down to their house next month. Let’s see if it throws “Nana” right over the edge

I am very lucky that my mother-in-law loves my dogs and even my cat (she’s not a cat person at all unless she’s around my cat). Sometimes I think she loves the granddogs and grandcat more than her 3 grandkids!
Growing up though, my father’s mom wouldn’t come stay with us because of our dog and cats. We always had dogs and cats when I was little so I think I only remember my grandparents staying with us a couple times. When we moved out here to be closer to them, they never came inside because of our dog. She was part chow and part blueheeler so she wasn’t big, but she was very hairy and VERY protective of us kids (even though we were pretty much grown by then). It used to drive me crazy, but then my parents divorced and I ended up not having a very good relationship with my father’s family (especially my grandma) and I heard a rumor that she found out I had 2 dogs and a cat and she said that she would never come to my house because of the animals. Cool! I don’t have to worry about her showing up at my doorstep uninvited!!!
I would choose my dogs and cat over pretty much any of my family members any day. My dogs have never treated me badly like my family has. They may drive me crazy at times, but not in a bad way. Sometimes they also make me feel stupid (especially my cat!!), but not in a bad way, either.

Thanks Amy. I do dread family functions. I wish they were more tolerant. My dogs are such an important part of my family that it makes me really sad that they are excluded. Its like if I had 3 kids and I was only allowed to bring the eldest to functions and everyone else had to stay home.
Good for your daughter for sticking up for the dogs. She will be a much better person for it!
Thanks Peanut!
Cynthia, mine aren’t even allowed over for a romp. It has really caused tension between us all.
Jen, my Saints aren’t good with cats, but the labs are just fine. Her cats hide in her room most of the time we are there anyways. They come down and hiss and bite at us when they are out. I can understand her not wanting them hurt, but they wont even come around when there are guests.
LOL Amber…. That’s a good plan I guess.
Spoiled – Same reason I dont go to Christmas in WV. I am not going to leave them in a cold kennel because the family doesnt like them. They act like their fur and drool is going to burn big holes in their clothes and skin.
LOL Jessixa!
Jan, I heard someone talking at Bark Park over the weekend. She had two dogs, one big (mild mannered and sweet) and one little (not so sweet and ill tempered) She was talking about how she hates to have people over because it is harder for her to hold on to the bigger dog when the door bell rings even though he is very friendly and the little one acts a spaz but she can hold on to easier. I started thinking to myself… why invite people over if they don’t like your dogs? If people don’t like mine, they can stay home.
I prefer the company of the thundering herd to some snooty person that looks down on you for having animals any day!
Shannon, I wish I could put my foot down and say a dog is welcome or Im not coming… but my hubby will just go with out me the inlaws wont really care.
Thanks for sharing that Hillary. Its nice to know I’m not the only one that has that attitude
Hmm, no dogs are banned in my family. We are all dog lovers. And we all have dogs, many are not as well trained as they could be and are a big pain, but we tolerate it. Well…I guess I am not allowed to bring my dog over to my grandma’s apartment, partly because she doesn’t like dogs and partly because her apartment doesn’t allow them.

Mmm my mothers dog and mine are sisters (they yap yaps) the problem at my home (which my mother used to stay at) was more she thought she was the pack leader, would overfeed her and disregard my training etc…she hasnt met Chels
I have taken Chels out to family functions and they are cool, it actually keeps the kids occupied who all want to walk her, especially my nephews who dont have pets….and if they come to my home I put chels away with a bone. Surprisingly tis my favourite aunt who is petrified of dogs, says ‘bring her out, this is your home, I will cope’ …. i just love her for that …. My cousins have bought the staffies since day one which not every one loves but they are their babies…We’re all aware that its bring the dogs, or they are locked at home alone and we dont want that.
Id make my own family functions, invite others but let them know your dogs will be there… then its up to them…

I wish my stupid nephew Misha the attack cocker spaniel were banned from family events. He attacks me all the time and gets on the furniture. Momma doesn’t take us to events cause we’re too distracting and not off-leash trained. Plus if there are any stairs involved, well, not my thing.
Slobbers,
Mango
Lindsay I am the only one in the family with a dog here. We have a small family and the other members are strictly cat people. OH’s grandma has an OLD poodle that comes to town with her and frowned upon. My family out west (thats MY family), only my sis has dogs and they are kept outside.
Don’t you wish you could pick your family like you can pick your dog?
Mango… attack cocker huh.. lol
A pair of cockers is the ultimate reason Brutus and Rufus were originally surrendered to me.
Abbey, My son is the only kid. BIL and SIL have no kids. Its a very small family.
I’d love to have a dog friendly function. If I invited them they wouldn’t come and it would be moved to someone elses house.
lora, thats heartbreaking. its different if the reasons for avoiding contact with your dogs is something unavoidable like allergies but to not give them a chance..
oof
have you ever talked to them about it? i know it sounds cheesy, but if they love you, they should make an effort to understand you and the dogs you love

We are a NON talking family. My husband would be absolutely mortified and TO if I said ANYTHING to his parents about anything. So I have to either deal with it or make everyone mad and not go. They are pretty cheesed off that I dont go to WV for the down home XMAS celebrations…. but I wouldn’t go even if I didnt have dogs.
Its a very strange family dynamic. It makes me sad. I loathe family events.
