Uttt Ohhh - Jail Break!

Posted by Saint Lover

OHHHHH I am sooooo mad! As you all know we have moved into a suburb neighborhood with 6 dogs from the country. It has been an adventure needless to say. Everyone lets their dogs roam or leaves them unattended in electric fences.

Since we also have the pool, the kids are here nonstop wanting to swim. So far they have all been good about latching the pool gate on their way out. Last week I caught the gate unlatched, but closed and was able to shut it before the dogs discovered it. However today I was not as lucky!

The last kid left to go home, Z leaves to play golf and my OH has my car (with the keys to his car). I let the dogs out back to pee and walk inside for 3 seconds to answer the phone. I hear Brutus start barking as I am walking to the door… All the dogs but Zeus and Brutus are GONE! And no where in sight! I absolutely panic! I throw on my shoes and run out the door with a handful of leashes.

My first concern is the little yip yaps (3 crazy barking chihuahuas) on the corner that really wind up B and R. So I run straight there, not a one of my dogs in sight. So I knock on the door and ask the lady to bring her dogs inside just in case. Rufus is actually pretty good with little dogs, but I didnt want to take any chances after the “Yorkie incident”.

I am bawling and hysterical at this point searching for them desperately. I see the kid that left the gate open and lay into him bawling hysterically. I hear another one of the boys calling “Brutus, Brutus” and running towards my house. It was Rufus and he ran around the front of the house to get back in… (guess he got hot and had enough of an adventure after 5 minutes). They all start heading back to the house with boys in tow. Thank goodness! Crisis Averted.

That 5-10 minutes seemed like an absolute eternity.

I went back over to the Yip Yap’s house to let her know they had been rounded up and to thank her for bringing them in and explained what had happened with the gate. I assured her it wouldn’t happen again.. She was thankful that I had come to warn her. The gate is now locked and I have hidden the key. I will just have to keep it locked and escort the kids in and out. Another lesson learned - burb life is difficult with 6!

I hate that. Because we live on post they do our lawn care. A couple weeks ago I let my two out without realizing the lawn people had left the gate open. Lucky they only get right across the back lawn to visit the neighbor dogs but it’s scary considering while in Kentucky Flash got out of the fence and was missing for 8 days. I’m glad the guys came home and no little dogs were hurt in the process :)

Wow, scary. Back when I was a little kid, my Saint/GSD was being dogsat at a friend’s house when our family took one of our crazy cross-country driving trips. After about a week at the house, MayMay decided to go home. She busted out of the fenced yard and found her way home (more than 10 miles) and decided she would stay on our porch to wait for us to get home. The friends came each day to feed her rather than take her back and risk another breakout. I still remember how exciting it was to drive home and see our dog waiting for us on the porch!

(Must have given my parents a heart attack, though.)

[...] I get so much joy out of seeing my collars on dogs! And this one just looks phenomenal on Zeus! Look at the shiney coat! Lora the Collaraholic strikes again! You should pop over to her site and read about how a neighborhood kid left her gate open and the furries had a little neighborhood run. [...]

oy! I would have fallen over dead!

Qor snuck out once behind me when I went from the yard to the driveway.. she managed to get the door open after I thought I’d closed it.. she was out roaming around .. no collar.. no tags..

My neighbor hollers from her yard “hey! did you know your dog is out!?”.. omg! she was in my neighbors garage! Like a good girl, she came when called.. (and detoured to my neighbor to say hi!).. but it was all I could do to keep the panic out of my voice.. otherwise I never would have gotten her back!

    little nutball.

I’m so glad your kids are ok.. and what a good boy Brutus, letting you know!

I hate that feeling! My mom’s saint was really bad about darting down the street if you blinked and sometimes with my little dacshung following. That saint had the longest legs I have ever seen on any dog and she boy could run. One day I remember chasing the 2 for 3 blocks and I couldn’t believe I was staying close behind them. It’s amazing what powers you have when your kids are in danger. When I caught them, it seemed like forever before my mom finally pulled up in her vehicle. I was so mad at that saint but it was so hard staying mad at that crazy dog because of those big droopy eyes layng in my lap in a puddle of “I’m sorry” drule.

My momma always freaks out when we have a jail break. We live really close to the interstate and one of my doggie neighbors had a jail break and ran to the interstate and…

    Glad you all are OK.
