Ouchie Paws

Posted by Saint Lover

The pool has claimed yet another victim.  This time its the star of “the big splash” Rufus.  I noticed two days ago (when the video was shot) that Rufus had started limping a little. Of course I became very concerned that he hurt his shoulder jumping in and that it was my fault for encouraging him.  I gave him a buffered aspirin and sent him to bed.

Yesterday he played and swam in the pool, chased the labs around but no jumping.  We were all exhausted and took a nap.  He limped a little going outside but once he got out there he could hardly walk.  OMG what have I done…  back in the house we go and massage his leg and shoulder.  I can’t find any tender areas but he’s still limping and feeling quite sorry for himself.  Another buffered aspirin down the hatch and I am resigned to the fact that a $$ vet visit is in store. While watching tv he climbs up in my lap (yes he thinks hes a lap dog along with all the others) and I am rubbing him and I touch his paw.  He pulls it back and whimpers…. hmmmm could this be what the problem is? Upon inspection I find he has scuffed up his pads to the point they are raw on 3 of his feet and the one he is favoring has a big flap of paw pad torn back.  There’s the culprit!  No wonder he is limping – OUCH, the poor baby, at least no stitches.

They are falling like flies I tell you!  Brutus has a scuffed spot on his front paw too and now Apollo’s front paws are raw and ouchie.  He didnt really want to jump in yesterday so front booties for him as well.  The black, dark-nailed dogs are all fine. Pads are fine, nails a little worn in the back from launching, but no more than say walking on pavement.  I am keeping an eye on them.  Its the light-nailed dogs that are suffering.  I called my vet and she says light-nailed dog can have softer pads and nails than dark-nailed dogs.  Looks like Rufus will be getting boots too.  Ruffwear has the light blue boots on clearance 50% off at Backcountry, com’s outlet in their XL and XXL sizes.  I think I am going to get a pair of each so both saints (Brutus’s paws are raw too) will have a pair and the bigger pair for their front and smaller pair for their back paws.

Here is Rufus feeling sorry for himself.  I clipped the hanging piece of dried dead paw pad which has really alleviated alot of his pain. I put on some bag balm, a sock and a Muttlucks boot to protect it when he goes outside and to prevent him from licking it.  It looks alot better today.

Still waiting on Fedex.. I checked the tracking and its on the truck out for delivery.  The UPS truck just drove by again. The second time today.

TOMORROW —– BARK PARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting that the white nailed dogs have it harder. Chase is black nailed, and black, and he has the most sensitive feet of all of our dogs!

I hope that Rufus heals up quick! He does look very sad… :)

That has to be the saddest face we have ever seen on a Saint! Good going Rufus, now groan a little and ask for chewies.

Mum says to tell you to get better. We say, let’s have a pool pawty!

Rufus, you poor chap. Hope you are back in action soon. Momma has watched your swim movie about a gazillion times and it makes her smile every time you “jump” into the pool and then drink the water while you swim.

    Slobbers,
    Mango

P.S. From Momma – Dexter is limping again this morning. I have not been able to find buffered aspirin anywhere! Grrrr..

  16. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Oh no.. poor Dexter. Walmart carries a generic too. As long as it says “coated” on the bottle its about the same as buffered. The main concern is getting it down the hatch and into the tummy before it starts breaking down. The non-buffered/coated stuff will ulcerate the trachea.

Give the little guy some hugs and kisses from me.

Glad you liked the video of Rufus.. he’s feeling much better today.. infact so much better that when I let him out to potty this morning guess where I caught him… yep! Sitting on the steps IN the pool! Silly boy. I have opened the flood gates I’m afraid.

George… he was practicing hard too. He really thought he had a shot too. Oh well.. dog down. He will just have to pawticipate in something else, like looking cool… he got a new surprise at the store today!

  21. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Peanut.. glad to know you use it too and it works. So far it is helping us out alot.

  22. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks for the tip Bev, we certainly are open to try anything at this point and if you say it works, we’ll give it a try. Missed you at the park today.. Hope everything went well and we will see you next weekend. it was awfully hot and alot of the dogs were really snarky so you really didn’t miss a whole lot.

  24. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks Baylee… Rufus is lounging around getting lots of special hugs and kisses. He’s still limping some today, but is feeling much better than he was.

  25. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks Maggie and Mitch.. it was a lesson learned  He’s doing much better today.

  26. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Cyn, I dont think the rule is a hard and fast one. It is interesting though that it there is a difference in the nails. Eris’s are so hard I can hardly cut them.

  27. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks for stopping by Dozer, Dottie and Cooper. We appreciate your comment and checked out your blog too :)

Rufus does know how to turn on the woes me puppy dog act and it usally works to get his way.

Hope to see you around

Aw, Rufus, you got an ouchie! But at least you had SO MUCH FUN you didn’t even stop and kept on playing. If you have to be injured, a play injury is the way to go.

    Hope you feel better soon!

Awe thanks Christy.. I will let Rufus know he is in good company. Take care of handsome Dylan’s paws… have you tried booties? Neopaws has some really awesome ones that would look way cool on him. They are working really well for Apollo.

  33. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks Jen, he is feeling alot better today.

Thanks for stopping by Booker and leaving us a comment. I think multicolored nails give a dog character  Hope to see you around soon :)

  35. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Jan, Rufus sure can work those eyes can’t he… makes my heart melt every time. Brutus had to wear one of those boots for almost a month last year… he even had to leave the house in it

  36. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks for Tagging us Baylee.. we played along and tagged a few people too :)

  37. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Amber it is the pool decking (the rough concrete around the pool) that is tearing up their paws and nails. Its only the light nailed dogs that are effected. Apollo, Rufus and Brutus (mostly from running around the pool chasing Apollo and barking)

  38. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Amiga.. that’s hysterical.. I DO need a doggie lifeguard. We got our box on Friday and LOVE our new toys. I posted some pictures of them tonight :)

  39. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

    Thanks Tuffy

  40. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks Lindsay.. he is feeling better today and is walking much better. Its amazing how quickly that concrete decking tore up their paws. I feel really bad for them.

  41. ChristyNo Gravatar

Yes! I got him some Muttluks not too long ago and they seem to be working. He mostly has trouble when we are out hiking off leash. He’s a maniac so my biggest concern was finding some that would stay on. He wears them on his front paws only and they twist around sometimes but we haven’t lost one yet. My vet said he might have so many issues because his nails are so long? Not sure if that applies to Rufus but Dylan has long quicks and therefore long nails. I need to get back to dremel training him!!

    Christys last blog post..Messy House

  42. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

We have muttlucks too, but I dont really like them that much. I think they may be too big because they come off and twist around. They are good for emergency boo-boo care.

Rufus’s nails arent long and I keep them trimmed up and dremeled. Our pool has really rough concrete decking and it tears up toes, feet and our flip flops.
