Oh Rufus!

Posted by Saint Lover

Oh Rufus how could you?! I know its my fault for leaving the 5 pound bag of dog treats on the counter and leaving the house, but did you really have to eat them all while I was gone?!

I left the house in a hurry yesterday, not even thinking about the brand new bag of dog treats I left sitting at nose level on the counter.  Rufus, as you must be well aware will help himself to items left on the counter and in the sink whenever I am gone.  I have to be extra vigilant to make sure I put every thing, espeically dirty dishes, away before I leave the house or it is fair game in his eyes.  Last month alone (in a span of 3 days) he broke 5 dinner plates pulling them out of the sink! I have to get another set of dishes now, UGGG! Serving spoons are another of his vices.  But I digress….

I knew he had been up to no good as soon as I walked in and they all ran and hid around corners and furniture.  No ecstatic greetings like usual.  Then I spotted the carnage – the empty treat bag shredded to bits in front of the TV and not a crumb in sight.  I’m not sure how many of the treats he shared with the other dogs because nobody else had a dodgy tummy.  But OMG the gas that came out of him about an hour before bed was toxic.

I kept letting him out to do his business and nothing.  He wasn’t “uncomfortable” just gassy so I wasn’t overly concerned about bloat.  I took him for a short walk around 1:00am and he had some “success” and so it began.  Every two hours or so he would wake me up and desperately race outside.  Of course in between each of those trips out he had a mess on the carpet in my bathroom.  GROSS! I am absolutely wiped out today.  Grrrrrr!

Poor baby felt so sorry for himself. Do you think he learned his lesson?

Oh the poor love…just doing what comes naturally…bit of counter surfing, checking for the odd yummy

Chels hasnt got into the sink yet, but the dishwasher and bench tops are fair game. I decided my house is actually cleaner with the hound in it. ive either got to be one step ahead with her putting things away or straight behind her with a broom or mop to clean the latest adventure up…

Do you think dogs have long memories and he will remember his upset tummy…or will his love of snacks over ride that memory.

You must be exhausted with all your night wanderings…pull the blanket up and sleep…

Oh my… well, no, he probably learned the lesson that treat bags are yummy! LOL… but maybe you learned a lesson? ;)

    lol…no sympathy.

Diesel ate so much sheep poo whilst out on our sheepdog training session that he made himself sick this week. They never learn!

I don’t think dogs make that connection since so much time has passed between the joy of eating treats (in front of the TV no less!) and the gas+worse episodes. Come to think of it, I don’t think gas ever bothered a dog. Diarrhea, yes, but gas is just a fact of life.

Poor silly Rufus. At least he enjoyed the eating part.

I was going to suggest that Rufus needed a lawyer since the evidence was purely circumstantial, but then as I read further, I think the evidence is quite incriminating.

Did he learn a lesson? I’m guessing not. Most dogs don’t equate cause and effect unless they occur within seconds of each other. Eat goodies and a few hours later have gastrointestinal problems. No, that doesn’t wash with dogs.

I don’t get that “learned his lesson” comment. I mean, those cookies were left out for you, right? And those tummy troubles were like HOURS after you ate the cookies, so I don really see how the two could be related. Your mom must be confused.

Ughh! I hope you’ve had a chance to rest up a bit. I made a similar mistake on Monday after Zoe ran her last course at the agility trial. I put her back in the car and thought I’d let her rest in the front seats instead of in her crate. What I discovered when I came back to the car a few minutes later was that she had found the bag of treats, and finished them off, and started on another bag she’d found. Will I never learn!!!??? LOL Fortunatley, she didn’t get sick.

Silly boy. What were you thinking!

  17. ChristyNo Gravatar

Rufus needs to come live with me. It would motivate me to keep my kitchen cleaner. My dogs have been known to steal loaves of bread and tubs of butter. I leave butter out often when I make my morning toast on my way out the door to leave for work. I always come home to an empty tub on the floor. Dylan is the suspected culprit!

Ugh, that is so frustrating when they do that! Yet, I always know it’s my own dumb fault when I leave something out and Ace gets to it. I can’t help but laugh when it happens to someone else. It’s too bad he ended up with a tummy ache, but I’m sure he did not learn his lesson. :) He must not have shared much with the others. I wonder what the others think when one does something bad, like, “You are going to get in trouble when Mom comes home.” Or maybe they don’t think that way at all.

  21. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

LOL Abbey.. I don’t think there is a chance in Hades that it will detour him from getting into the treats again. He has a one track mind. FOOD FOOD FEED ME FOOD!

  22. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Cynthia… you’d think I had learned a lesson, but I bet within the next two months it will probably happen again! Is leaving things out like that what they call “senior moments”? They seem to be coming more frequently these days

  23. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Oh gross Vicki!!!! Sheep poo redux.. blah!!! Don’t you wonder what goes through their minds sometimes? I mean, how on earth could that taste good?

  24. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

I am pretty sure you are right Biggie.. he has no idea that being a glutton made him feel bad. I know it did, you know it did .. but he would do it again in a heart beat. I think if i would have left another 5 pounds out on the counter he would have helped himself, even with the tummy ache!

  25. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

LOL Jan.. I am pretty sure Brutus had a few, but our boy Rufus had the lion’s share for sure. He STILL has the runs a little bit and it is that funky treat green color.. blah! I am pretty sure he didnt even realize there was a lesson let alone learn it. I am sure we will have a repeat in the foreseeable future.

  26. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Mango… bwahahaha! Obviously I did leave them out for him. How silly of me not to realize the counter is fair game and in fact an offering from the treat gods upon my departure. I guess I shouldn’t point paws…

  27. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Linds, just wait til Dannan figures out that chairs were invented solely to help catapult one onto the counter tops to surf!

  28. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks Baylor, we did get some sleep. He felt much better yesterday. He sure did feel sorry for himself though.

  29. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Kaos… he was like Peg Bundy sitting in front of the tv watching soaps and eating bon bons! Silly boy! I sure hope I learned MY lesson. But something tells me, it will most likely happen again

  30. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

    Jess

  31. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Charlie, you sound as though you are an authority? Have you stolen any treats in your day?

  32. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

George, Christmas certainly did come early. The treats were even xmas colors! I think the only lesson to be had is for me. MUST PICK UP TREATS BEFORE LEAVING THE HOUSE. I feel like such a knob.

  33. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Oh I am pretty sure you are right. Infact, had I left another 5 pound bag out for him that day he would have gotten it. Dodgy tummy and all.

  34. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

I think you are right Sophie… in fact he waits for anything to fall from the sky or materialize on the counters. He usually makes a kitchen perimeter check hourly.

  35. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Marie, lucky she didnt get sick. it is no fun. The gas that Rufus was letting was enough to clear a room. I can’t imagine being cooped up in the car with them like you would have been.

  36. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

I have no clue Swissy… probably just one word, FOOD FOOD FOOD FOOD! Man those boys can eat.

  37. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Christy, I have left the butter out a time or two myself. It always ends badly too. I do have to keep my kitchen clean and picked up, no dishes in the sink or he makes me pay dearly.

  38. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

I am pretty sure you are 100% right Dori. He would have learned 3 years ago.. but instead he keeps wishing, hoping and praying for the treat gods to render gifts of food.

  39. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Thanks Maggie and Mitch, tummy still not 100%, but getting there. He certainly hasn’t missed any meals over it though.

  40. Saint LoverNo Gravatar

Lindsay, you are completely right it was 100% my fault Too bad I couldn’t have blamed it on my DH or son… lol. I am pretty sure Apollo and Zeus sat there drooling with wanting eyes. The saints won’t share with the other dogs, but will share with each other. And the absence of gas and squits in the other dogs i don’t think they got any. They were just sad they didn’t get any would be my guess.

  41. The Zoo CrewNo Gravatar

That sounds like something that Willow would do. The darn big white pup can’t figure out and remember that she’s to leave the counters and sink alone!!! Hard-headed, perhaps?
