Liver Treats and Barkday Cake
I had a request for liver treat recipes… so I dug up these two. They have also been added to the K9 Cookbook for easy reference. I am not a big fan of liver but dogs sure like it!
Since I was looking through my recipes I decided to dig out my Doggie Barkday (birthday) Cake recipe. Hera has her “gotcha day” on November 4th and it’s also the day that I celebrate her barkday (birthday). Because she is a rescue, I dont have a clue about her past. I choose her special day for her. I hope you get to use this cake recipe for your dogs’s barkdays. (Of course I will post pictures of the cake for Hera’s pawty)

I could keep my humans away from the liver treats but I’m not so sure about the bark day cake. I like the liver treats idea, my dogs would do anything for liver, but I hate touching raw or cooked liver alone. I’m curious about why chicken liver for one recipe and beef liver for the other one.

Thanks for the recipe for the cake! I had a horrible experience with Gus’ first birthday and I baked a cake that had crushed dog food in it. My house stunk terribly for DAYS. We’re definitely doing all-natural recipes from now on!

I always have a weird mix of nostalgia and nausea when I make anything with liver. My mom used to make Liver and Onions (and told me it was roast beef) when I was a kid and I loved it.. even after I found out what it was, I loved it.. until I saw the raw liver sitting in a bowl of blood.. then I was over it..
but the smell still throws me back to my childhood.. grosses my honey right out though.. the dogs never leave the kitchen… there are puddles of drool on the floor!

I made liver treats today… The recipe was so easy and Bosco is going NUTS for them!
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 lb beef liver (I used chicken livers since that is what I had)
Puree liver in blender until smooth, pour into bowl. Mix in flour, cornmeal, eggs and garlic. Spread on greased cookie sheet (I used no stick reynolds wrap on the cookie sheet rather than greasing). Bake 20 minutes. Cut into bite sized pieces with a pizza cutter. This makes a LOT and it freezes very well.
Bosco says they are Droolicious!
I hate the smell of liver so Baylor and I have a wonderful friend who makes them for us. Every birthday we get a new huge container!
Thanks for sharing the recipes.
Blessings!
