Man Saves Dog from Shark

Posted by Saint Lover

Holy Moly! I saw this story on a couple of forums I frequent and of course on one of my favorite blogs The Poodle and Dog Blog. I typically don’t comment on stories in the news since there are so  many good blogs that cover them much better than I do… But this one I just couldnt resist!

Owner saves dog from shark’s jaws

Wait what!!! Are you kidding me?!  This man takes his dog down to the marina for his dog Jake’s daily swim.  He watches in horror as a 5 foot shark torpedoes up from the depths and chomps down on his dog and pulls it under the water!  OK this is the stuff horror movies are made of.  So seeing this, he JUMPS IN the water (with a shark in eating mode) and PUNCHES it in the head so it lets go of the dog and they swim to shore in BLOODY WATER (hello shark homing beacon)!!!!!!!!!! OMG!

I suffer from Selachophobia (fear of sharks) - I know…  I live in a land locked area but I have the most irrational fear of sharks imaginable.  I am sure it stems from the fact that I went to see Jaws when I was only 6 years old and to make it more scary for me my mom told me it was real.  It took me a couple of years to get in the deep end of a swimming pool for fear that jaws would come rushing out of the drain to get me.  Or checking the toilet before I sat down because jaws was lurking at the bottom of the bowl waiting for me to sit down and would eat me.  I wont even go in the ocean past my calves.

While I love the beach and the water, every ripple of the waves is a sinister fin in my mind and it terrifies me. I would love to watch my dogs frolick in the waves but only if they go in only to thier paws… do you think that is possible? Ha! I had countless nightmares last night of Brutus and Rufus being devoured by a shark and of couse in plain english they were asking me to help them…

It got me thinking.  What would I do in that situation?  Would I jump in or would I watch in horror as they disappeared under the water?  What would you do?  Or is it a matter of just acting with out thinking when the situation araises?

Clearly the stroy could have had a terrible outcome… I am very pleased that both are safe on dry land.  I wonder if ol’ Jake will ever go swimming again.  I know one thing, my dogs are safe and sound on dry land and I am thankful for that!

After taking a spin around the neighborhood Brutus hunkers down for nap time

This man is a hero! We’d like to think that our mom would jump in and rescue us from a shark’s powerful jaws! Would you, mom? Would you? Mom says she hopes she’ll NEVER have to find out!

    Love ya lots,

you aren’t the only one who has an irrational fear of Sharks because of Jaws. My partner does too. And don’t you know that the ONE time she’s finally convinced to go swimming off the barrier islands in Florida, they close it down for a shark siteing!?

I don’t know what I’d do.. I think, knowing my passionate nature, I’d haul ass in there.. but then again, I don’t have an irrational fear of sharks.. I have a healthy save my butt respect for sharks. (I have a shark tooth tattoo and one of my spirit guides shows himself to me as a Megaladon)

Hope I never have to find out about that one. Although pee-wee better watch out for snapping turtles in the pond.

I once stopped four lanes of traffic because my Poodle was playing in the street. I didn’t think, I just did it. Afterward I just started shaking when I realized what I had done. I think most of us who love dogs or our children would just act reflexively. Maybe it’s courage, I think it’s mostly reflex.

I asked Mummy what she’d do and she just stood there dumb founded - if the delayed response was anything to go by I’d be in that sharks belly before she ever responded.
You see Lora, there is a perfectly rational and valid reason for not getting in water!!
I will ask Dad to see what his response is - but it won’t sway me to the water…

Holy Cow!!! Since we moved out to a more rural area I dream almost every night of my little Sasha getting attacked my coyotes. It doesn’t help that my mother-in-law leaves her out ther by herself and doesn’t turn the light on before she goes outside with the dogs at night. The other night a window got left open and I could hear the coyotes howling so of course my dreams got worse. In every dream I go chasing the coyote and save her, but then I wonder what would happen if I wasn’t home. I know my husband would do the same thing, but….well there’s lots that goes through my head.
When I was younger I was sure alligators would come out of the toilet. I figured out after watching the toilet in our camper that nothing could come up unless you were flushing so I got really good at flushing and then running out of the bathroom really fast. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one with weird toilet issues. lol

Dont know whether that man is a hero or a fool…. I dont fear sharks at all if Chels gets taken it would be at odds of over a million to one. Sharks are timid creatures by nature & we have already decimated their numbers (See movie Sharkwater)

They lost a man to a crocodile in the Northern Territory last week now some stupid politician wants to cull the poor things….How stupid to swim in their breeding waters I say.

Oh, how awful! I feel so unhappy for your six year old self.

I think I would just jump in without thinking. Then, I’d be in the water thinking, “Holy s**t!” When Dannan was newly with me, he ran off a couple of times (slipped out of his collar once, and went under the fence at the dog park another time). I raced into the street after him, not even giving the traffic half a thought! So I’d be shark bait, I think.

Honestly, I don’t know. I have only been in one other scary experience and I do know you act out of instinct and don’t really think too much. I am so glad that man and his pup are ok !
That shark had to have a surprise getting socked in the nose !

I don’t know what I would do. I can’t imagine myself jumping in and punching a shark, but in those situations, you just never know!

Look at it this way, would your dog come in and try to save you? Probably.

Its a horrible horrible proposition….but I think I would probably jump in after her. I just love her so much, and you know how adrenaline takes over in an emergency. Though, I’m not very coordinated, so if I saved Moxie, I’d probably lose an arm in the process.

I just stay away from the ocean. When I was a kid I was afraid of sharks in swimming pools too, and I wouldn’t even think of swimming in a lake where i couldn’t see the bottom. No amount of telling me sharks couldn’t survive in chlorine could asuage my fears. I too was afraid of the toilet, but because I thought snakes could come out of it. I did the flush and dash too for years!

While I tend to always ere on the side of caution I have put myself at risk for my dogs. A few winters back a dear friend and I took the dogs to the lake for a Christmas Eve walk. We were up on a trail hiking along when her dog took off down an incline and out onto the frozen lake. She fell through. I was amazed at how fast someone reacts in a moment like that. I was down the incline and had given my three dogs (who were on leash) to my friend, went out on the ice, fell through but by the grace of God was able to save the little dog.

    Blessings!
