That is NOT on the menu?!

Posted by Saint Lover

See these beautiful pitt bulls, they are my sister’s dogs Murphy and Daisy.  They live out in the wild, wild west of Arizona. Arizona has beautiful warm sunny days, an arid climate and lots of little creatures.  Some of these creatures that are not so nice to run into. Creatures like rattlesnakes! Avoiding rattlesnakes is a way of life in the foothills of the Sonoran Desert southwest.

Murphy (the adult male) is no stranger to rattlesnake run ins.  He has had 7 encounters with them including this latest one last week (its really late for them to be out of hibernation too).  You’d think he’d learn, but some dogs, like Murphy, must like the challenge of keeping his yard critter free.

Murphy’s M.O. is to engage the snake, kill it and leave it for his mom and dad (like a present - thanks Murphy) to find and dispose of in the trash.  Its has been a good arrangement so they always know what he has been bitten by when they take him to the vet for treatment.  This time however, it was obvious he had been bitten, the puncture marks were visible on his muzzle and he had the other obvious signs of the strike, the snake carcass could not be found.  While searching my sis and bil noticed Daisy (now almost 6 months old) was starting to foam at the mouth.  Fearing she had been struck as well, they gave her a good going over but did not find any punctures.  The abandoned their search for the carcass and loaded the dogs up and headed to the vet for treatment.

Murphy started treatment while the vet looked over Daisy.  It was obvious she was suffering from the rattle snake venom, but they could not find any bite wounds.  Not sure exactly what happend next, but they induced vomiting and OMG look what came up!

Sis and bil were in the waiting room when the first “piece” came back up and the vet staff started the whole OMG OMG GROSS thing so they ran into the exam room just in time to see “piece” number 2 come back up. GROSS!  Yes, that is the rattlesnake that bit Murphy!  Apparently Murphy and Daisy decided to play tug of war with the dead snake and after they tore it in half and it was no longer a fun game, Daisy thought it was a good idea to eat it.

Both dogs were treated and released, and have fully recovered.  WHEW! I wonder what mischeif they will get themselves into next!

I did a post a while back about stuff dogs swallow. ..NOTHING like this though. Probably the vet is prepared to treat bites, but this must have been a shock to them.

Wow, that is really gross! Is it a good thing that Daisy didn’t really chew up the carcass? (would there have been more venom in her?)

How big was the snake? That is really fascinating. But gross. Good thing they are both ok.

OMD!!! YUCK!! Glad they are ok though but that is awful! Poor babies…they are so cute too by the way! We have rattlesnakes here too but not as bad as in the Southwest and my Mom is scared when we go on hikes because she thinks I will find one and try to play with it… so far so good!

Send the cute Pits our love and well wishes!

I don’t know what is grosser, the idea that the dogs ate the snake, puked it up, or that they took pictures of snake puke. Just glad they are OK…

We know all about rattlesnakes in NM too but thank goodness we’ve had no run-ins. I think I would’ve lost my lunch had I seen that come back up!

Haha! Yuck! Those poor snakes! And the poor dogs! But the main thing is the dogs are OK. I do not have any experience with rattle snacks.

By the way, your sister’s pitbulls are gorgeous! You should post more pics of them.
