Apollos Ears – an update

Posted by Saint Lover

Yes – I am still dealing with Apollo’s ear issues. But we finally have an answer and the culprit. After lab cultures countless rounds of oral antibiotics, ointments, drops and cleaners – Apollo has a resistant gram negative pseudomonas infection of his MIDDLE ear.

Gram negative rods stain pink with Gram staining. Gram negative rods in general tend to be more resistant to antibiotics than Gram positive (blue-staining) bacteria. Pseudomonas is particularly resistant and able to become still more resistant if treatment is not decisively effective from the beginning. Gram negative ear infections are best cultured promptly so as to identify Pseudomonas and take appropriate steps as soon as possible.

The infection is resistant to most of the antibiotics tested but we have found one that it seems quite sensitive to. I am picking up a bottle of Gentamicin Ophthalmic Solution today and hoping for the best.

The vet (Dr Stoughton) feels that its a good possibility that he obtained this infection through his blood stream when he was attacked a few years ago requiring two revisions. The bacteria has laid dormant in his middle ear (a haven for bacteria to hang out) and some sort of trauma or stress/allergy has caused it to rear its ugly little head (oh wait its bacteria… it doesn’t have a head).  Once we get the infection under control our next order is to try an isolate any allergies that may be causing problems whether it be environmental or food allergies.

I have cut out all treats and table scraps from his diet other than Science Diet hypoallergenic Treats and his Taste of the Wild dog food. Paws and Fingers crossed we can get to the bottom of things soon and Apollo’s ears will be “normal” again.

Luckily we don’t get ear infections so often but if our ears are neglected for more than two weeks, than the problem starts. It’s because it’s dirty. Faith sometimes get ear infection from irritation after being cleaned. I hope his ears clears up soon. Must be really nasty huh? Poor guy.

I hope that you can figure out what’s causing the allergies. Ace is allergic to something as well. I am thinking about doing one of those skin tests where they can possibly figure out what he’s allergic too. I haven’t looked into it a whole lot yet but it’s always in the back of my mind.
