Apollos Ears – And It Continues
And it continues…..
I went to the vet this morning with Apollo.. looked at his ears and very pleased with the progress. I am to treat (triz-eta wash 1x day + antibiotic drops x2 ) for 3 more weeks and we will do another culture and sensitivity to make sure there is nothing left that has become resistant to the antibiotic.
HOWEVER, He also had blood drawn for a T4 thyroid panel. If the hair loss is any worse in 3 weeks we will also do a skin scraping to see what is going on. UGGGG
The hair loss on his hip has gone from the size of a quarter to about that of a half dollar in 2 weeks. No itching, no licking, no scratching…. The Vet does not feel it is a reaction to the antibiotics as its too unique and localized to be a reaction. The Thyroid panel was taken but haven’t heard back yet and other possibilities include demodex, ringworm or allergy. I am about to loose it!

Poor Apollo. He looks like he has so much patience.

I had something like this happen to me only one time and because my mom is so ANCIENT she can’t remember what the vet called it! I lost a little bit more fur than you did, Apollo, until it ran its course and it was 6 months before my fur grew back. Someone on our Airedale Nutrition group at Yahoo suggested we take 1/2 of a 400 mgs folic acid tablet. Mitch and I both take one (I’ve been taking it for years now) faithfully every day and It has never happened to me ever again! Our vet had never heard of this treatment but he did say that the folic acid couldn’t hurt us! Maybe this could work for you too?
Love ya lots

Ace has some thinning hair on his legs and he has an itchy chest and has lost some hair there too. I’m sure it’s all related to allergies somehow. I just don’t know where to start on figuring out what’s causing it. I think a skin test would be a good start. Let me know how it goes with Apollo if that’s what you end up doing.

I just randomyly ran across your blog and my dog has something very similar that just started. It looks as though someone shaved a patch of fur off his hip. It’s not red, scaly or anything and he’s not scratching at it. Very curious to see what happens with your dog. Hope he’s better soon!
