Salad Dressing Packet Poo

Posted by Saint Lover

There’s been another new development in Rufus’s “tummy trouble” ordeal.

I just knew I’d jinx things when I posted on Thursday.  We had yet another bout of low grade fever, lethargy, no appetite, sad eyes and general malaise Friday evening.  He even spit out the treat I tried to give him.  I can not believe we are going through this again.

After a good night sleep, Rufus is up Saturday morning hungry, no fever and feeling better.  I take him out to potty and he doesnt poop, he strains a little, but nothing comes out and he quickly gives up. I find this odd, but dismiss it since he didnt eat his dinner the night before.  At this point I decide I am going to call the internist on Tuesday (holiday weekend) and make an appointment for him to have an ultrasound of his belly to hopefully get to the bottom of things once and for all or get some peace of mind.

Around 1:30 (30 min after my vet’s office closed) he goes back outside and has success… Yey for poop.  The poop is sort of orangeish and something green catches my eye so I take a closer look.  OMG there’s something in there!

What comes next is gross…. but if you are reading this, most likely you have a dog AND YOU KNOW you’ve done it at some point yourself so dont point fingers and judge…lol

I dig away a bit of the poop and OMG its a T. Marzetti’s Ranch dressing packet.  Are you kidding me?!  I immediately started wracking my brain trying to figure out when and how he could have gotten a hold of the dressing packet and eaten.  The only thing I could remember was a chicken sandwich I had from Wendy’s two weeks earlier!  OMG it was in there for two weeks! I remember they knocked the can off the counter when we were out one night, but never in a million years would I have thought they ate anything non-edible out of it.  That is not Rufus’s style to eat non-edibles… he’ll lick a package clean, but never would I have imagined he would have EATEN the entire thing!

Rufus has been absolutely fine since he pooped out the dressing packet. I spoke at length with his vet and she strongly believes this was the root of his issues and the limping (he only limped a few times) was a result of a soft tissue injury and coincidental to the foreign body. The symptoms fit with that diagnosis and she feels there is nothing sinister around the corner.

When we were first seen in the clinic her initial thought was a foreign body but it was dismissed when I was adamant there was no way he could have gotten something… boy was I wrong.

He was lucky he passed the packet and did not need surgery to remove it. It took about two weeks to pass.

Poor pup! I’m so happy everything worked out okay (even if it took two weeks!). Love the blog — it’s great!

OMG! Reminds of Luci as a pup-got into the cabinet while mommy was away! Got a whole pound of pasta, brownie mixes, microwave popcorn and a couple of boxes of granola bars with those shiny wrappers. Found those in the yard for WEEKS! And she got some of my Mardi Gras beads a few years back. They’re just wonderful to run over with the lawnmower! Poor Rufus!

Oh yes, we know all about the poop archeology projects around here. What a scamp you are to hide that salad dressing in your tummy for so long. That would explain a lot.

I would guess you didn’t mean to eat it, but it was so small it likely just slipped down. Hey, it happens.

I’m glad Rufus feels better. We’ve had similar situations with Stetson chewing up a hard rubber hockey ball and not to mention getting the insides of his plush toys. The plush toys sometimes leave hangers and require assistance to get all the way out….ewwwwe…

Wow, this is a great story Lora. My dogs like to eat so much plastic they will often poop pastic pieces. They have also developed lethargy and a bad stomach from time to time, I never realted the two, but I will be in the look from now in.

WOW! So glad to hear he’s feeling better. I’ve had similar experiences with one of my dogs who will eat anything that crosses his path that even sort-of resembles food… But what made me really laugh was “What comes next is gross…. but if you are reading this, most likely you have a dog AND YOU KNOW you’ve done it at some point yourself so dont point fingers and judge…lol” YEP!!

Thank Dog Rufus is better!!! So sorry you were worried, but I have a question… Was the salad dressing packet completely intact? ‘Cause I’m sure it tastes fine and you could use it on your next sandwich…!!!! Uh oh… I better go… My momster made a face and said I’m being gross!

Could have been money you would have to piece together. That is a common thing for dogs to swallow. Glad it all worked out.

I am so glad he was okay! My doberman, Zelda got a whole chicken carcas (sp?) out of the trash the other day and thankfully I was right there to get it from her before she consumed the bones. We keep the trash in the pantry and she has discovered how to open the door…I didn’t know she knew how. Dogs are really just big babies we must watch every second. Thank goodness we enjoy that part so much! :)

I feel your pain, glad your pup is doing better now. My Chessey last Summer ate a package of steak from the fridge, cardboard, plastic and all. She was in bad shape for a few weeks. But we knew she had ate the whole thing when we retunred home to find only a small piece of paper left from it.

Wow! That is a bit crazy. Goofy boy! I’m so glad everything “came out OK” (So to speak). I’ve never had a dog (as an adult) so I’ve not had to deal with this! My cats occasionally eat something odd – but the worst I’ve found in the litter box is a chewed up rubber band – and the occasional piece of something shiny!

Wow, what a crazy story. I’m sure you were very worried. It’s hard when even the vet doesn’t know what’s up. I’m glad Rufus is feeling back to normal now.

Rufus oh Rufus! You have a very itchy mouth. Heehee! I’m glad to know everything came out. If it didn’t, something bad could happen.

Poor thing! They’re such an endless (but delightful) challenge, aren’t they? So glad to hear I’m not the only one proved wrong to the vet! Vance’s daddy used to eat packaged foods (in their packages), but fortunately Vance hasn’t shown a similar inclination.

I am so happy it passed without further incident! I had to chuckle because last week I was hopping around our backyard investigating lumps of poo – looking for what my dog had recently eaten. Turns out it was a small teddy bear. Apparently he helped himself to eating it at some point. I found the completely intact head and subsequent body parts followed over the next few days. Sure is scary when you are watching your dog obviously in pain. $1800.00 of vet fees later it passed thankfully before we had to do surgery. Dogs…you gotta love them!
